In what situations can herbal medicine be helpful?

Can I take herbal remedies while taking pharmaceutical medications?

What form is the medicine in?

Can you bill insurance?

Herbal medicine can be useful in acute and chronic situations. Herbs can be helpful in first aid and everyday illness. Plant medicine also excels in supporting long-term imbalance and subclinical conditions - symptoms that have not yet developed into overt disease.

Some examples of when herbal medicine can be particularly effective:

Immune Deficiency and Autoimmune Disorders
Anxiety, depression, and emotional health
Digestive Issues
In times of stress or transition
Healing from trauma
Reproductive and hormonal issues
Neurological concerns and conditions
Colds
Flus
Sleep Issues

I am always treating the whole person and not just a symptom or disease. We will look at lifestyle, diet, constitution, cultural and social context, as well as spiritual and emotional process.

I do not order lab tests, prescribe medications, or diagnose specific conditions. There may be times when your needs are beyond my scope of practice, or when we need more information to formulate a care plan. I refer to other practitioners when appropriate.

While some plants have contraindications and interactions, herbal medicine is often compatible with taking pharmaceutical medications. In fact, in some cases herbal medicine supports the action of pharmaceutical drugs or can help mitigate side effects.

I most commonly give medicine in tea and tincture form. I work with clients to determine what the most convenient, nourishing, and effective form of medicine will be for them. Herbal formulas are made individually for each client.

My favorite forms of medicine are oils, tonic teas, sprays, amulets, nourishing broths, and nutritionally dense herbs incorporated into food.

Tinctures are alcohol extracts of plants. The alcohol concentrates the medicinal properties of the plant, meaning that tinctures are taken in small doses and are not inebriating.

If alcohol extracts are not a good option for you, we can always work with alcohol-free options like teas and glycerines.

I always use whole plants or extracts made with whole plants, not individual concentrated constituents. Medicinal plants typically contain a myriad of constituents that together reflect a nuanced and harmonized medicinal profile. I am always working with the energetics and personality of the plants as well as their constituent profiles.
