"Transforming Touch is an attachment-focused, neurophysiological treatment utilizing hands-on healing for Developmental Trauma. Transforming Touch crosses the barriers of non-verbal and recognizes that through regulation, the client can begin to change their story about their non-verbal, early trauma and gain greater capacity." - Steve Terrell, Austin Attachment and Counseling Center
SE Touchwork
Somatic touchwork, aka Coregulating Touch, is a somatic modality that can support recovery from developmental trauma, as well as nervous system regulation and greater capacity to experience safety in the body. It incorporates an understanding of early developmental reflexes, trauma, and the physiology of the nervous system. It can be particularly helpful for folks who experience chronic pain, complex physical symptoms, anxiety, and depression. Coregulating touch can help us access a felt sense of safety with another person which can support healing attachment wounds.
Somatic touchwork is both energetic and physical and includes bringing contact to areas of the body that give us information about safety - for example the brainstem, adrenal system, and gut. Sessions are clothed and usually on a massage table, though touch can also be offered from a sitting position or however the client is comfortable. Touchwork sessions are collaborative between myself and the client, and agency, consent, and empowerment and always centered. My training in somatic touchwork is primarily from Kathy Kain and Steve Terrell. You can read more about their work and coregulating touch here.
